Drama at Inish and the Shea's Gala are the latest
As the President's prediction of packed churches on Easter Sunday falls by the wayside and the call to suspend nonessential travel and assembling in groups is extended at least another month, it is not surprising that Buffalo's theater season continues to adjust. As expected, the Shea's Gala and the final show of the Irish Classical season will not happen as scheduled. Shea's has rebooked Audra McDonald in October, which is likely to be a very busy month, as three months of postponements get shifted into the fall.
Shaw and Stratford have postponed. Irma Vep is off at the Kavinoky and their production of Paula Vogel's Indecent is schedule to resume its run in the summer. The Buffalo Opera Unlimited Carmen at Rockwell Hall has been moved to next winter.
In other news, the 74th Annual Tony Awards, previously scheduled to air live on CBS on June 7th will be rescheduled. The great Terrence McNally, four-time Tony winning playwright has died from complications of COVID-19. Actor Mark Blum (Lost in Yonkers; Gore Vidal's The Best Man, Twelve Angry Men) has died from complications of COVID-19. Opera star Placido Domingo, recently implicated for sexual harassment, adds a diagnosis of COVID-19 infection to his woes. Tony winner Gavin Creel (Waitress/replacement, Hello Dolly!, She Loves Me, Book of Mormon) and Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge, Next to Normal, Catch Me if You Can) have also tested positive.
Here is a list of productions scheduled for Spring 2020, roughly in chronological order of opening. Those that are confirmed cancelled, curtailed, or postponed in response to COVID-19 are in red. Some predictions put the peak of the pandemic in May or later. With various possible scenarios for the future progression of the virus, we can assume that other cancellations and schedule adjustments are forthcoming. This list will be updated as information becomes available.
